Project Description
Vietnam is the focus of the 2023 event series “Traiect” (Traditional Asian Instruments and Electronics), now in its fourth edition. The Hannoversche Gesellschaft für Neue Musik is staging “Traiect” to stimulate encounter between musicians from this one Asian music culture and other contemporary composers. During a several-month-long project phase, international participants will collaborate on developing new perspectives on traditional instruments from various positions of contemporary music.
During a three-day workshop, the Vietnamese musicians Ngô Trà My and Vũ Thị Thùy Linh will present their Vietnamese instruments, such as the Đàn Bầu (one-sided box zither) to a group of international composers from Vietnam, Colombia, Ghana and Germany, and try to come up with some initial ideas for new pieces. In the following six-month project phase, the participants in coordination with the Vietnamese musicians will produce seven new compositions. The finished pieces will be performed by the musicians for the first time at the Sprengel Museum Hannover, which Deutschlandfunk will broadcast as a special feature. In addition to restaged productions at the Überseemuseum in Bremen and the Academy of the Arts in Berlin, additional performances are planned in Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The accompanying programme will include interviews with the musicians and composers, along with other presentations, discussions and school projects.
The featured Vietnamese musicians were selected in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Vietnam and the co-curator and composer Lương Huệ Trinh. The Center for World Music at the University of Hildesheim and the music ethnologist Fernando Palacios Mateos will be accompanying “Traiect Vietnam”; a partnership with the Hannover University of Music will allow two students from Italy and England to participate as well.
