The Women of Troy

The Landestheater Altenburg has developed a new translation of Euripides’ ancient tragedy “The Trojan Women”. The ensemble of the Theater & Philharmonie Thüringen collaborated on the production with guests from Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria and Burkina Faso. The play was performed in three different languages, the music was arranged by the Kurdish composer Ömer Avci. In addition to performances in Germany and Turkey, the play has also been staged at the ancient theatre in Pythagoreio in Greece. The Landestheater Altenburg chose the subject matter to emphasise the mutually intertwined roots of Germany, Turkey and Greece. Antiquity and the legends surrounding the Trojan War are common points of reference in all three countries.
The central element of the project was to create a unique aesthetic style; in addition to the German tradition of spoken theatre, the participants incorporated elements of Greek-Turkish-Kurdish theatre traditions into the play, primarily expressed through music and singing. The production has been accompanied by an extensive programme featuring follow-up discussions, symposiums and a special exhibition at the Lindenau Museum in Altenburg.
