project description
Legend tells of the world of the Armenian-Georgian filmmaker Sergey Paradjanov (1924-1990), who is as famous as he is virtually unknown in the West. His works, quoted by Lady Gaga among others, are of a fascinating artistic diversity. In his films, he revives stories and legends from a wide variety of origins.
In Legend, Kirill Serebrennikov focuses on Sergey Paradjanov's artistic universe by taking up Paradjanov's favoured forms of vocal music and storytelling - the legend - and translating them into stage compositions consisting of live music, texts, dance and video images.
In a series of twelve surrealistic and opulent chapters, the production tells of the various stages of human life. Serebrennikov works with Paradjanov's visual language and shows his world as a projection screen for our desires. He mixes anecdotes from Paradjanov's life with references to historical events and reflections on life, death, dreams and passions. The play will be staged with actors from the ensemble of the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg as well as performers and musicians from Ukraine, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. After its premiere at the Ruhrtriennale 2024, it can be seen at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg.
A co-production of Ruhrtriennale, Thalia Theatre and Kirill & Friends Company.
