In the project “Aller et Retour”, the transnational performance group Hajusom collaborated with young performers from the Centre de Formation et Recherche en Arts Vivants (CFRAV) in Ouagadougou on a production examining the images and views of Europe and Africa. For the past several years, the award-winning theatre collective Hajusom has worked with young refugees and immigrants from Burkina Faso and other African countries. In this production, the members of the Hajusom ensemble traveled to Burkina Faso and – drawing on their own experiences of escape and life in Germany – collaborated with Burkinan artists on a theatrical trip of discovery centred on the “paradise of Europe”, reasons for escape and migration, and the expectations and disappointments which these evoke. In addition to personal experience and research, much of the performance was based on material used in the Hajusom music and puppet performance “Paradise Mastaz”, performed for the first time in Ouagadougou in 2013.

The young artists participated together in workshops, jointly developed and conducted by the artistic team from Hajusom and the CFRAV instructors in Ouagadougou. The artists developed parts of the production separately, e.g. in the areas of performance, text, music, stage and equipment, and later combined them in the Afro-European music performance “Aller et Retour”. The performance and concerts were presented as works in progress in Ouagadougou and Hamburg.
