Sixteen Daily Experiences
Sound art at the Platz der Weltausstellung
At the Platz der Weltausstellung in downtown Hannover, project organizers set up an array of 16 columns equipped with loud speakers which created a sound field 16 times a day – starting at sunrise and continuing throughout the day at hourly intervals. International composers have been commissioned to write pieces, strictly limited to 59 minutes in length, for this performance. The composers have been asked to pay special attention to the conditions of musical perception in public space and respond to the acoustics on location. The spatial interpretation of sounds and their placement in an everyday environment not only raised musical aesthetic questions, but also highlighted the role of music as a social medium.
In addition to the daily recordings, the field of columns was used as a performance venue for electronic music in public space.
