On the function of art, its usage and the role of the viewer

Tobias Rehberger, a resident of Frankfurt am Main, is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of his generation. His works, for which he has received awards around the world, have been presented in solo exhibitions in Europe, Asia and the United States. As a professor of the Frankfurt Städelschule, he also plays an important role in the artistic life of Frankfurt. Yet an extensive solo exhibition of his works has never been staged in Frankfurt before. Therefore, the Schirn Kunsthalle was closely cooperating with the artist himself to present an exhibition of some 100 works, the focus of which will be Rehberger’s examination of the function of art.

Commissioned in 2009 to renovate the cafeteria of the central exhibition pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Tobias Rehberger created a functional and sculptural Gesamtkunstwerk for which he received the Golden Lion. Based on this work, Rehberger developed a new spatial installation for the exhibition at the Schirn in which “sensual overload” will serve as the guiding principle. The exhibition showed a representative selection of his works from years past including pieces which probe the boundary between art and design. Rehberger also created a special installation affixed to the glass rotunda of the Schirn which was visible from outside the museum as well.
