TheMuseumsLab Collaborations

Overview

TheMuseumsLab is an exchange programme which allows staff from African and European museums to jointly explore the history, current situation and future of museums on both continents. TheMuseumsLab brings together a wide range of perspectives and skills to create a forum of discussion on how museums can approach their colonial past and address current social and global challenges.

The programme TheMuseumsLab now serves as the basis for implementing international joint projects. The German Federal Cultural Foundation has allocated €553,000 to fund the measures from 2024 to 2027.

The follow-up project

Since it was established in 2021, TheMuseumsLab has enabled some 150 young museum professionals from Africa and Europe to participate in joint exchange and education programmes. This has resulted in the formation of a vibrant alumni network whose members are especially open to engaging in new forms of transcontinental collaboration. As part of “TheMuseumsLab Collaborations”, the initiative now invites these alumni to carry out joint research projects with German and international partner institutions. The funding measures will be accompanied by network meetings that are open to the public.

Further details on application requirements and funding guidelines will be posted shortly on the website of the Museum für Naturkunde (Natural History Museum) in Berlin: www.museumfuernaturkunde.berlin
