Festival at the HafenCity Hamburg

Beyond the large art fairs and biennials, new forms of artistic activity and presentation strategies are developing around the world at a rapid pace. Although these artist groups, producer galleries and artist-run spaces operate outside the established cultural scene, they have become extremely successful and widely accepted by the public. The three major art institutions in Hamburg - the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Deichtorhallen and the College of Fine Arts - have invited more than thirty artist collectives from around the world to Hamburg. The festival in the HafenCity was comprised of three parts - an exhibition, a temporary academy with podium discussions, lectures and seminars, and an event programme featuring performances, concerts and book presentations. The events took place in a temporary exhibition venue designed using 100 ship containers based on urbanistic models.
The festival's international character provided fascinating insights into the quality and importance of non-established artistic strategies in today's cultural scene.
