Project description
The Theater an der Ruhr is a pioneer in the field of international theatre work in the German-speaking region. Since it was founded in 1980, it has continuously promoted dialogue with other cultures. It has given guest performances in over 40 countries and has invited theatre groups from more than 50 countries to perform in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Arabic-speaking international artist and theatre collective Ma’louba is currently the artist in residence at the Theater an der Ruhr in Mülheim. Based on its experience in producing bilingual theatre pieces, Ma’louba has teamed up with similar ensembles to build a nationwide producer network in Germany. To this end, six bilingual ensembles have joined forces: the Ma’louba collective at the Theater an der Ruhr, the Open Border Ensemble at the Munich Kammerspiele, the Exil Ensemble at the Maxim Gorki Theater, the Boat People Project and the ensembles Hajusom and Ruhrorter. The fledgling network, based at the Theater an der Ruhr and the Munich Kammerspiele, aims to use the collaboration to develop bilingual artistic and theatre projects in the long term. In the first two years of collaboration, the members will focus on sharing experience with each other internally. Smaller artistic presentations, lectures and public symposiums will be organised during this period. In the third year, the project will commence a European co-production with the Arabiska Theatre in Stockholm. It will also develop and organise a touring festival entitled POST-HEIMAT. Staged at the Theater an der Ruhr and at venues in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin, the festival will present the artistic work of the individual ensembles and the resulting co-productions to the general public.
