Project description

Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach is planning the first major comprehensive exhibition of the American artist Park McArthur (*1984) in cooperation with mumok – Museum moderner Kunst Sammlung Ludwig in Vienna. In her works, Park McArthur explores existential dependencies in a formally aesthetic and thematically innovative manner. Her creative work often focuses on themes related to her personal situation which is characterised by numerous, life-saving devices, and her life in a wheelchair. McArthur’s work is widely acclaimed for its exceptional sociopolitical character, not least of all because her imagery succeeds in precisely conveying existential questions that are normally given little attention. Her works contain numerous references to Minimal Art and Conceptual Art of the past 60 years.

At Museum Abteiberg, the project organisers will place her works in dialogue with the existing collection whose focus is on art from the 1960s and 1970s. One of McArthur’s models, which the artist created to be medially present without having to be there physically in person, will be tested as part of an education programme by students of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. The centrepiece of the educational programme are audio files which shed light on the relationships between the artistic work and the exhibition venue. In addition to the exhibitions in Germany and Austria, the organisers are planning to collaborate with an American institution and produce an extensive accompanying publication.
