Mosaik by Johannes Hegen
Exhibition - East German comics
Explanations
The comic magazine Mosaik, published between 1958 and 1976 in the GDR, is widely regarded as the "comic strip of the East". Though it shaped an entire generation, very few West Germans have heard of it. The stories about the three main characters, Dig, Dag and Digedag, are remarkable for their culturally-historic and scientifically-technical educational value and their highly aesthetic artwork. The comic series was the theme of a new exhibition at the Francke Foundations in Halle which continues to place special emphasis on educational issues. The exhibition elucidated the history of the magazine and compared it with other west European comic strips. The accompanying programme included a cultural-scientific symposium and a comic competition for children.
