A fine line
The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum owns a surprisingly large collection of works by artists who were once imprisoned at Auschwitz. The portraits, which comprise the majority of the collection, depict the psychological and physical suffering of the prisoners without actually portraying the terror and violence. The artworks are fundamental expressions of life, in which the usual distance between the producer, recipient and portrayed person is removed.
